South Korean breakout star PSY is likely to perform in CCTV's New Year's Gala, the most-watched TV event in the world, reports Duowei News, an outlet operated by overseas Chinese.
PSY shot to global fame this year with the video for his song Gangnam Style, which has received over 600 million views on YouTube and spawned countless imitations.
An estimated 800 million people watch the Chinese state broadcaster's Lunar New Year extravaganza each year and rumors say the star may be paid 1 million yuan (US$160,000) for his appearance. Some cultural observers suspect his popularity may lead to a trend in China for learning the Korean language.
Gangnam Style has struck a chord worldwide for its sense of humor, with the slightly chubby star and his "invisible horse-riding dance" subverting the mainstream of good-looking pop idols who take themselves too seriously and poking fun of the lifestyle in Seoul's upmarket Gangnam district.
