While watching BBC, CNN,..., I 've seen these ads for property in the Philippines.

http://www.liveyourdreams.ph/

I've only been to Manila & the traffic jams & gun toting security don't give a good impression as a place to stay. They've also had problems with kidnapping of chinese

Some of the properties being advertised are in places I've never been to e.g. Boracay, Aklan, Batangas,...

Interested to hear views from anyone whose familiar with these areas & how they compare to Metro Manila. How do these places compare to Thailand e.g. Pattaya, Changmai,..?

I have worked in the Thailand & Philippines before (1 season - boracay teaching scuba diving) and have business dealings for the last 12 years.

My opinion, any where outside Manila is nice (to me). CEBU would be the most ideal as there are lots of shopping (keeps wifey happy).

So in your opinion which would be a better place to stay Thailand or Philippines?

I haven't been to Manila for a few years, since the company closed its Manila office. Back then Manila was having problems.

Curious if things have improved after all the years.

there are no birds in manila, which means the air is grossly poluted or the populace is so massive and hungry that they will eat anything they can catch.

Are you serious about there being no birds?

Depends on what you prefer. Nearby areas from CEBU (to the north). Really nice.. not many people went there before. My personal fav spot is a place called SAN JOSE in the provice of Antique (hope that is the correct spelling). They don see much tourist the dive spots there are incredible. Lot of sharks = lots of marine life (food mah) - but tat was when i was in my 20's now going mid 40's CEBU is better. Maybe retired in 5 years time, I spend 5-6 months in asia travelling China, E. Malaysia, Thailand & Philippines. Other 6 months look see in CA.

The Thai are nice people too but just not my cup of tea. But my take is why buy. These countries rent good enough liao. Property appreciation is best only in big city while smaller town/city. Slow appreciation and the rental cashflow are very poor - when you factor in the mortgage, you will end up subsiding the tenant. Does not make much sense to me - unless you have stamina to hold property for 30-50 years like wifey family.

The only problem I see with Thailand is with the language, its not the easiest language to learn:smile: I've got some Thai friends & I find them ok but since I don't understand Thai they may be making fun of me behind my back:biggrin:

Is crime & security an issue outside of Manila:confused:
What's your impression of the health care facilities?

I was thinking of renting. More convenient as you can re-locate more easily, avoid all the hassles of foreign ownership & the global crisis has shown that property may not be a good investment.

I don't think I'll live another 20 years & if I do I'll have to move to a retirement home
