Promotions/increment/bonus- base on performance or whether your boss like u?

Did u get a good promotion this year or a record bonus? Is it due to pure objective results. Or did u play the good political game and make your boss look good and got rewarded? Can u look at those who got promoted and say 'Yes, he or she deserves it!'. In times where we look at the widening income gap, the gulfs between the have and haves not, it's time we look at the ranking and evaluation system and see if it is equitable.
 
No promotion anywhere has ever been based on "pure" objectivity.

Everyone here gripes about the unfair hiring process, of locals being shut out and FT HR hiring their own. I am just bringing up that even if u r hired, the evaluation process is also depends on your 'network', if u r not part of the 'gang' forget it!!

Everything is easier if you're physically attractive. You don't even need to proactively porlumpar... your bosses (both sexes) will subconsciously look out for you, give you assistance and help you out. All you need to do is focus on your job and everything else will fall into place.

I had to promote myself. In our industry, no one would admit that he or she is the boss.

The dumbfuck losers in here complain because they are mostly incompetent nincompoops and never get promoted. They blame FTs because they are useless and FT happen to be a convenient excuse

You may also encounter a boss who is consciously or sub-consciously against those who are physically attractive. :D
 
Every assessment will have an element of subjectivity. Objective assessment is usually based on measurable items . Subjective assessment usually involves the soft skills of the candidate and thats where bias and favouritism can creep in.

You have a team of sales people. The guy who topped the sales charts regularly upsets all the others. He is not a team player. His presence has affected the morale of the rest of the team. Despite being the top salesman for 2013, you feel his presence in the team resulted in a 20% loss of productivity at team level.

Objectively he should be given a raise and a promotion based on the fact that he sold more than everyone else.

Subjectively you feel that you should fire him and the overall sales figures would rise considerably and would more than compensate for his absence if he was let go.

So what do you do?

I would if I felt he could make good contributions. Just put emotions and personal feelings aside and get on with the job.

I agree to the extent that this person is involved with a team. However some people may be required to do 'solo' type work eg troubleshooters.

To be honest, I have never seen this happen in my whole decade of working in the corporate world. You're a very unique character.

I think these things happen although not very often. A shared goal can make for strange bedfellows like sometimes in politics. They may not like one another but realise they have to work together to get what they want. Yes so I would employ someone that i am not particularly fond of as long as he or she can do a good and honest job.

I've seen successful business partners who don't like each other. I've come across successful band members who hate each other but play in the same band because they compliment each other musically.

However, I have never in my life come across a manager in a company promoting someone he does not like.

That manager should recommend his disliked but very capable subordinate to another post which is simultaneously a promotion as well as a transfer out to another department! Kills two birds with one stone. Better still if that other department is headed by an impossible to please boss - 借刀杀人!
