Convicted rapist and murderer, Romell Broom, has been given a one-week reprieve from the governor of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville prison.
Authorities have said they will need to come up with a solution so Broom can be put to death by lethal injection in the state's official execution chamber.
Broom is to be executed for the rape and murder of 14-year-old Tryna Middleton in Cleveland in 1984.
Some of Ms Middleton's family members, who were present to witness the execution, became emotional after it was botched.
