Price of rice dumplings on the rise

SINGAPORE: With the Dragon Boat festival coming up in June, customers might have to fork out more for the traditional rice dumplings.
This as the price for glutinous rice, a main ingredient in the dumplings, have risen by almost 50 per cent in half a year.
Other ingredients such as chestnuts, bamboo leaves and oil have also become more expensive - pushing up overall costs of the dumplings by some 20 per cent at some shops.
At Dong Yuan rice dumpling store, dumplings will cost, on average, 20 cents more than last year.
However, some other stalls Channel NewsAsia spoke to said they are not increasing prices because of competition.
But some neighbourhood stalls are trying exotic abalone dumplings to attract more buyers.
Priced at S$10, they are giving the pricier ones at restaurants and hotels a run for their money.
