If George Washington were alive today, he might face a hefty fine for the late return of library books.

Officials at New York Society Library said one of its ledgers shows that the president racked up 220 years of late fees on two books he borrowed, but never returned.

One of the books was the Law Of Nations, which deals with international relations. The other was a volume of debates from Britain's House of Commons. They were both due back on November 2, 1789.

George Washington owes some serious fines at a New York library. The first US president (check out his photo on the US dollar bill) never returned two library books that were checked out in the late 1700s and the NY library system would like them back.

Like a bad episode of Seinfeld from the 1990s the library has revealed they have discovered two books checked out by George Washington that have never been returned and since they have been out for so long the two books have accrued some $300,000 in fines for being 220 years late!

It appears the library is not seeking cash as the New York Society Library says it will not pursue the fine. However, it would like the books back.

According to the Associated Press, one of the books was the "Law of Nations," which deals with international relations. The other was a volume of debates from Britain's House of Commons.

Both books were due on Nov. 2, 1789.

華盛頓不誠實！借書221年不還

〔編譯管淑平／綜合報導〕紐約歷史最悠久的圖書館─紐約社會圖書館，最近發現一個令人意外的偷書賊：以誠實出名的美國第一任總統華盛頓！他向圖書館借書不還，逾期221年之久，欠下的這筆逾期費相當於現今幣值30萬美元（約台幣942萬元）。

根據紀錄，華盛頓是在1789年10月5日從紐約社會圖書館借了兩本書，一本是講述國際關係的「萬國法」，以及一冊英國下議院辯論紀錄；而且華盛頓就連在借書單上簽名都省了，僅由一名幕僚潦草地寫了「總統」。

紐約社會圖書館是當時曼哈頓地區的唯一一座圖書館，華盛頓原本應該要在一個月內還書，但實際上卻是一借不還，因此逾期費就從那時起持續累積。該圖書館館員最近將歷年借書名冊數位化時，意外發現此事，圖書館表示無意追討這筆罰款，只希望能把華盛頓借的兩本書找回來。

只不過向來以誠實出名的華盛頓，這下他的生平事蹟要記下這筆小瑕疵了。
