SINGAPORE: A heavily-pregnant driver who was helping a Chinese national leave Singapore illegally gave the game away with her fidgety behaviour.
Her behaviour aroused the suspicion of Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers manning the Woodlands Checkpoint departure clearance on Monday evening, at about 8.45pm.
Nothing incriminating was found when the officers searched the interior of the Malaysia-registered car.
They found the Chinese national in the boot of the car.
The 29-year-old mother-to-be admitted to helping 43-year-old Chinese national Wei Cai Hong leave Singapore illegally.
Sbe claimed that she was approached by a male Malaysian acquaintance whom she knew only as 'uncle' to help convey immigration offenders out of Singapore illegally.
She met 'uncle' at the Kranji MRT where he handed over Wei and S$700 to her.
Wei claimed that she was in Singapore on a work permit as a factory worker but her employer had cancelled her permit a few days later without any reason.
As she had incurred debts to come to Singapore, she continued to stay here to make money to repay her debts.
She decided to return to China after learning that her mother was ill.
Wei had sought help from her Chinese friend to leave Singapore illegally through a Malaysian middleman for S$2,000.
She was charged and convicted for illegal entry on 7 July and was sentenced to 12 weeks' imprisonment and fined $2,500.
The driver's case has been fixed for further mention next week. - CNA/jm
