Pregnant woman says man ignores her in MRT, then female friend snatches seat

man_ignores_pregnant_woman_in_train-thumbnail.jpg

This man apparently ignored a pregnant woman who was standing near him in the train, and when he alighted, his seat was quickly taken up by his female friend.

STOMPer Priscilla, the pregnant woman, told STOMP of the incident:

"I'm currently 7 months pregnant. I boarded the train at Kallang yesterday (Oct 15) at around 6pm.

"I was standing near a man in his 30s in office wear, thinking that he would give up his seat, but I was wrong.

"Another man standing next to me shifted himself hoping that this man could see me and give up his seat, but still he didn't notice me as he was reading a newspaper.

"Shortly after, a female friend (in her early 20s) approached him, and they were talking.

"Obviously he could see me then, but still he continued to act blur.

"Shortly after he alighted at Eunos, I thought I would get his seat, but without hesitation, that female friend just sat down, looked at me, took out her mobile phone and the rest needs no further explanation.

"As I was travelling alone, the pictures taken only show them in it without me.

"The information and pictures provided are genuine."

So being pregnant give them the power to witch-hunt ?

That's quite true. Why is the man and his friend targeted? There is an indian man next to the man and a fellow in Adidas, these guys don't need to give up seat for pregnant women?

I do give up my seat to pregnant or elderly folk, but that's my feeling and choice, not that I must. I also paid the fare. However, I don't go around accusing others of not giving up their seats. It's their choice and they paid the same fare.

I still can't figure out how a man owes a seat to a pregnant woman when he's not the one who impregnated her. Giving her the seat would be very nice, but shouldn't be compulsorily expected as a matter of course, neither is not giving her the seat a matter of any shame. It's just not being very nice. If a pregnant woman or elderly or handicapped encounters someone who gives up their seat, that's fine and nice. If not, there're no entitlements, unless Parliament pass a law instructing so. Even so, one'd probably have to call the police to send a police car to catchup with the bus or train, and compell the man to give up his seat to others less physically able.

Kindness is to be from the heart of the giving side and appreciated by the heart of the receiving side. Accusations and legislations improve nothing in real kindness.

I once gave up my seat for a pregnant woman. Before she could take the seat, someone else quickly took it. The pregnant woman thanked me nevertheless. Fortunately she only need to get off 2 stops later.

Even after this incident, I still feel that giving up your seat should be voluntary.

Now I see why this guy is ignoring her. He must be thinking, why are you targeting me? Go to the priority seats area and get your seat from there. Or ask your seat from the neh neh next to me, at least I don't pretend to read newspapers

I agree with you on this, it is common courtesy to offer our seats to those who are in NEED of one. We have every entitlement to the seat we have paid for, when we boarded the train, it is the transport service provider duty to provide the best of comfort for their passengers, ensuring that all but most of their needs are provided for; the best possible time between point a to b, enough seatings, cleanliness etc..

Why should we be be compel to offer our seats to every pregant woman, elederly person, invalid commuters..???

If the pregnant lady is not feeling well or looking very pale...I will offer her the seat...but standing up, will strengthen her legs muscles & womb muscles..and any othe rmuscles... that will be needed to bringforth a healthy baby...

In short, it is a common courtesy to offer our seats..but this is not a MUST!:p
