BEIJING: Singapore's national table tennis player Li Jiawei may be busy gearing up for one of the most important events in her life, but even as the 27-year-old prepares for her wedding banquet in Beijing this Saturday, she took time off to reflect on her marriage and career plans after the big day.
For national paddler Li Jiawei, winning medals is clearly much easier than preparing for a wedding. Like other brides preparing for the big day, she is anxious to make sure that everything goes well on the crucial day.
She said: "Even though we get help from many people, we still have to take care of many details, such as the guest lists and where the guests will be seated. Then there are things that we need to purchase on our own. We also have to discuss with the hotel about many wedding details. It's really tiring."
Among the details she has to see to is the wedding banquet, which will have some 500 guests.
She will also have quite a few costume changes on the big day. Besides three evening gowns, the highlight will be the S$13,000 wedding gown. The gown, encrusted with 40,000 crystals, has just arrived in Beijing - flown in from Singapore, along with four workers from the wedding shop.
The preparations have been so daunting that Jiawei managed to sleep only four hours a day during the past week.
Jiawei and her 35-year-old businessman husband Li Chao registered their marriage in China last year. The two were introduced by a mutual friend and had decided to tie the knot in Beijing in September after a six-month romance.
Li said: "I believe in fate. I've always felt comfortable with him from the day we met. But when it comes to living together, I'm sure there are many things that we need to adapt and get used to.
"He is very career-minded and highly responsible towards work. He is also much older and more experienced than me, so there are many things in life that he can teach and show me, especially since I still can be a little temperamental and wilful."
Under a family planning agreement with the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) in October last year, the couple have agreed that if they want to have a baby, they must do so by the end of next year.
If not, they will have to wait until the 2012 Olympics is over to ensure that Li remains in top form during the London Games.
Li said: "I'm quite certain that the 2012 Olympics will be my last. Singapore has so much faith in me, and hopes that I can compete in the London Games. It's a great honour for me and I will do my best and coordinate with STTA. Both my husband and I will make the right arrangements. He can fly over and see me."
Both Li and her husband are so busy that a date has yet to be fixed for their honeymoon. But if Li has a choice, the couple will head to either Switzerland or the United States.
