<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->IN APRIL last year, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority introduced an online visa application system allowing foreign nationals to make an electronic application through someone known to them here.
Two men and a woman used this 'e-Visa' system to bring in China nationals, but fell foul of the law by allegedly making false statements that the visitors were relatives or friends of some individuals here.
In the first case of its kind, the trio allegedly did this for 164 visa applications between last October and early this year.
They are believed to have used the SingPass accounts of other individuals to make these applications online.
It is not known if these people knew their accounts were used in this way.
Chew Kum Kong, 58, faces 100 charges, and 26-year-old Nicholas Wong Zen Zhao, 60. Also charged in a district court yesterday was Tang Meilin, 34, who faces four counts of conspiring with Wong, a Malaysian, in the effort.
Court documents said that, when asked to state the relationship between the applicant and the foreign national requiring the visa, the trio declared falsely that the foreigners were relatives or close friends.
All three were released on bail and have to return to court on Sept 25.
Chew and Tang have hired lawyers; Wong told the court he will get one.
Tang, a former financial consultant, is the mother of a three-year-old girl and an 18-month-old boy. She is now unemployed.
