US$50,000 for Haiti relief
More than 100,000 people were feared dead in Haiti on Wednesday after a calamitous earthquake razed homes, hotels, and hospitals, leaving the capital in ruins and bodies strewn in the streets. -- PHOTO: AP
SINGAPORE government will contribute US$50,000 (S$69,423) to the international community's humanitarian relief efforts for Haiti, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.
The donation will be made through the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
President SR Nathan also wrote to Haitian President Rene Preval on Thursday to convey his sympathies to the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday.
In his letter to Mr Preval, Mr Nathan said he was deeply saddened to learn of the earthquake which struck Haiti causing widespread destruction and the loss of many lives.
'On behalf of the people of Singapore, I would like to convey my sympathy o all victims of the earthquake, especially to those who have suffered the tragic loss of their loved ones.
'I am confident that with your leadership and the assistance of the international community, Haiti will recover from this catastrophic event.'
