SINGAPORE : The President has appointed members of two key committees that will certify whether or not the minority candidates in the coming general election belong to their respective communities.

They are the Malay Community Committee and the Indian and Other Minority Communities Committee.

The announcement in Monday's government gazette is yet another sign that the general election is near and that the Singapore Parliament may be dissolved soon.

When this racist legislation was proposed, the definition of one's race went something like this: if you see yourself as belonging to a certain race, and are accepted by members of the race to be so, then you are deemed to belong to that race. This sounded good except that you couldn't possibly round up all the, say, Malays and asked them to vote whether, say Zainul Abidin Rasheed, is a Malay. So you had to appoint representatives of the community, and this is where there can be potential trouble.
