S R Nathan receives honorary NUS doctorate

SINGAPORE - Former president S R Nathan received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Chancellor Tony Tan Keng Yam of National University of Singapore (NUS) on Thursday, July 5.
NUS president Tan Chorh Chuan honoured Mr Nathan in his commencement speech to 260 graduates for his 'dedication to service' as the country's longest serving president and for being a top civil servant, reported The Straits Times.
The former president was among 260 graduates at the commencement ceremony. He had graduated in 1954 with a diploma in social work from the University of Malaya, before it became NUS.
Mr Tan also announced that the university will start a professorship in social work named after Mr Nathan.
The former president of the Republic then addressed the crowd of 1,000 graduating students, parents and NUS staff, urging graduates to be mindful of history to make sense of the future.
Over 9,000 students will be graduating from NUS in 22 ceremonies in the next two weeks.
