<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->A MARRIED man who throttled his lover, slashed her with a chopper and hurled her over a third-floor parapet was jailed for five years yesterday.
Diong Tiong Ngo, a 52-year-old Malaysian and permanent resident here, pleaded guilty to attempted culpable homicide and also to slashing the woman's son, then 14. The year-long jail term for hurting the boy will run concurrently.
Neither the 51-year-old Indonesian woman - who fractured her spine and a leg in the fall - nor the boy can be named.
Diong's lawyer Ramesh Tiwary said his client had a major depressive disorder and would have qualified for a defence of diminished responsibility if charged with attempted murder.
But the prosecution said the charge had already been reduced to attempted culpable homicide, and Deputy Public Prosecutor Amarjit Singh said a sentence of six to eight years would be appropriate.
The court had earlier heard from Mr Tiwary that Diong met the woman in 2006 when she was married to her second husband, who died soon after.
The lovers' relationship was rosy at first as he could support her, her 16-year-old daughter and son. Among other things, he bought a Batam condominium for her to rent out, but the relationship soured when he lost his coffee-shop business and could not maintain her as before.
She was then selling bird's nest products for an Indonesian supplier and he would hand these to acquaintances on credit. So when she demanded payment last November, he borrowed $2,000 but she insisted he pay the full $2,400.
The next day, he tried to reason with her and remind her of his generosity, but she ordered him out of the Ang Mo Kio flat he had also rented for her.
Mr Tiwary said of his client: 'He felt belittled and stupid.'
Incensed, Diong grabbed a chopper, chased her down the corridor and slashed at her hand and head. When her son came to her aid, he was cut on the arm nearly to the bone.
Diong then threw the woman over the parapet. Mother and son were in hospital for more than two weeks and are still in therapy.
Diong did not glance their way during the hearing. Mr Tiwary said Diong's wife and adult children were standing by him.
