In his featured interview with government-controlled media Channel News Asia, independent candidate for Potong Pasir SMC Tan Lam Siong said that he is not afraid of losing his S$16,000 electoral deposit because “it is worth it”:

“We need to look at our priorities and what’s more important. There are some things you just have to do, even if it comes at a great cost. If it’s worth doing it, you do it.”

The lawyer also said he is a better candidate than SPP NCMP Lina Chiam and PAP MP Sitoh Yih Pin but did not explain in which area. Tan Lam Siong also do not believe a three corner fight will only benefit the PAP:

“It could very well turn out to be the PAP losing more votes. If you have a two-cornered fight where people can’t see a better alternative, then of course you know where the votes will go. But if you have a better candidate in a multi-cornered fight, then I don’t think it is given the PAP will garner more votes. I hope to prove this assumption wrong this time.”

In the last General Election, SPP Lina Chiam lost to the PAP by 114 votes, due to the election carrots of HDB lift upgradings – a national upgrading programme which Potong Pasir residents have been denied 27 years for because they are an Opposition ward. Tan Lam Siong will contest as an Independent in Potong Pasir SMC.

Paper qualification wise, Tan as a lawyer is better than Sitoh as an accountant and Lina as a nurse.

However, I believed that he can swing away those people who don't like family politics which is what LKY did anyway.

Furthermore, I believe that there is up to 10% or so residents in Potong Pasir were very disappointed with how Chiam cannot get along with everybody since 1993. This is based on Chiam got 69% of the votes in 1991 compared to the subsequent elections where he got no more than 56% of the votes.

You can blame one person, twice but not possibly thrice.

Paper qualification wise, Tan as a lawyer is better than Sitoh as an accountant and Lina as a nurse.

Law is a different trade from accounting and nursing, not a "better" paper qualification. Just that there are high paying industries and low paying industries due to market forces. If you are a nurse known as "sister", you have more knowledge in your head than a small firm lawyer.

Try doing project construction management. More knowledge required than law but pays shit and long shit hours, manpower shortage everywhere and now filled by low-educated foreigners who cannot meet the standards, that is why so many defects in houses these days.

60% is a pretty high success rate in this world of stupid.if something cannot be expressed as a 100% certainty,it must be expressed as a fraction or percentage.if u chose the average man on the street,the chance of him becoming a doclaw is less than 2%.

The people of Potong Pasir deserve anyone but a Chiam. The Chiams have been treating Potong Pasir like their little fief for way too long. Even Tan Lam Siong is better than Lina Chiam.
