New Delhi, Dec 23: After over 40 girls were rescued from Rohini’s Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya run by Baba Virendra Dev Dixit, leading daily Times of India has revealed that the self-styled godman, who has been absconding was booked in four gang-rape cases in Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh as far back as in 1998.

  • All the rape survivors were followers of Baba Virendra Dev Dixit.
Police officials have informed the daily that all the rape survivors were followers of Dixit and had been living in his ashram in Kampil town of Farrukhabad district. The victims who were allegedly raped over the months of March, April and May in 1997 dared to register case against him only after they managed to contact their relatives or flee from the ashram.

They levelled allegations against Dixit’s aide Ravinder Dass as well in the FIR. TOI report claimed that the girls hailed from Mathura, New Delhi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

Talking to the daily, inspector-general of police (IGP) of Kanpur range, Alok Singh said that in 1998 seven to eight criminal cases were filed against Dixit in Farrukhabad. “We are trying to take out and examine old records. Dixit managed to get a stay on all the cases from Allahabad high court and later went absconding,” Singh added.

Earlier on Friday, Ashram’s neighbours had also shared some detailed memory of the so called ‘Spiritual University’. One of the Ashram’s neighbours yesterday said during the last two decades, numerous complainants had been made to the police but no action was taken in the matter. “I was also threatened for raising my voice in the media, but I was not afraid. I wanted to save innocent girls.I never went there. There are almost seven to eight gates, which used to remain locked,” the woman, who did not want to be named, said.

Narrating another horrific incident, she said, “One of my friend’s daughter was raped around two and a half months ago. And each time we approached the police, they asked us to give us proof. The victim said, in the ashram, there were groups of girls based on their ages.”(Also Read: I am Broke, Don’t Have Money to Pay Lawyer’s Fee: Honeypreet Writes to Jail Authorities)

Echoing similar sentiments, another neighbor said she has many at times saw girls going inside the ashram and never returning.

Dikshit is reprotedly an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna and is obsessed with the idea of having 16,000 women companions with him.

On Friday, a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar had said that it was “for the first time we are seeing an ashram where only minor girls are being kept confined”.

“You expect us to close our eyes to this and treat this as normal? What kind of spirituality is it when people are kept confined as animals in cages? We do not understand it.

“Where is the concept of free consent or spirit when you are not allowed to meet your family or friends or wear what you want to? You keep someone under your control for decades, then there it is not free consent. It is a strange set up that hundreds are lodged in closed confines,” the court said. The observations by the bench came while hearing of a PIL filed by NGO Foundation for Social Empowerment, which informed the court that several minors and women were allegedly being illegally confined at the “spiritual university” in Delhi’s Rohini and were not allowed to meet their relatives.

Nothing objectionable or captive women were found inside the ashram.
Law enforcement officials have spread their net wide in their bid to shutter ashrams run by spiritual guru Virendra Dev Dixit.

On Tuesday, Agra police conducted search operations at one of these ashrams located in Kahrai village on Shamshabad Road. Located on the outskirts of Agra, the ashram was operating out of a four-storey building in the name of 'Adhyatmik Vishvvidyalaya' (spiritual university)..

A few days back police raided the self-styled godman's centres in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh rescuing scores of young girls and women.

Dixit has been accused of running a human-trafficking racket.

NOTHING ILLEGAL, YET

Circle Officer Sadar Udayraj Singh told India Today that the police had received information that there were several young women living in captivity in the ashram.

However, upon entering the ashram the police found 10-12 women engaged in satsang (religious gathering) inside a large hall. When they were asked about whether young women were living in captivity in the ashram, they replied in the negative.

On further search, the police came across a door on the fourth floor of the building which was locked from the inside. When the police asked the women present inside the room to open the lock, they refused.

Consequently, women police personnel had to be called to get the door opened, although no objectionable things or captive women were found inside the ashram.

PEOPLE STILL NOT SURE

When India Today spoke to the residents of the locality, a number of them complained that the ashram saw a regular traffic of young women and dozens of women lived there at one time.

They expressed their doubts that the ashram was being used for trafficking of young women by its operators..

Shiv Kumar Sharma, former member of All India Crime Prevention Society and a resident of the Tajganj area said that most of these ashrams were used for illicit activities by fake gurus; he wanted an independent enquiry into the activities of these ashrams as most of them are engaged in land grabs and other illegal acts.

Because of these fake gurus, the people are losing faith over the real and spiritually enlightened gurus, which was not good for Hinduism, a religion based more on faith, than scriptures, Sharma added.

FARRUKHABAD: In view of serious allegations raised against spiritual leader Virender Dev Dikshit's Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya in Delhi, the police here on Saturday raided two ashrams run by him at Siktarbad and Kampil and rescued 47 women and a minor girl.

Senior police officials led the raids.

Facing a stiff opposition from the inmates, the police had to enter the ashrams through the roofs of the adjoining buildings, they said.

The women inmates of the ashrams demanded a search warrant for opening the gates and were also involved in a verbal spat with the police.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Tribhuvan Singh said the minor girl, rescued from the Siktarbad ashram, would be produced before a magistrate and her statement would be recorded soon.

Earlier today, the Delhi Commission for Women along with a police contingent raided an ashram run by the spiritual head in Dwarka and rescued five girls who were confined there.

On Thursday, raids were conducted on Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya in Rohini where women and girls were kept confined like "animals in a cage". The ashram was founded by Virender Dev Dixit.

At least 41 teenage girls were rescued from Rohini and several objectionable items were seized. Maliwal claimed that there were boxes found in the ashram that contained letters with "explicit content" written to the female inmates by Dixit.

The DCW chief had earlier claimed that the ashram in Rohini had metal gates at every 10 metres and the terrace had barbed wire to prevent the girls from escaping.

Local residents claimed that the girls were being tormented for years. They claimed that the police did not pay heed to complaints and its only now after the court order that truth about the ashram has finally come out.

The issue had come to light due to a PIL filed by an NGO Foundation for Social Empowerment before the Delhi High Court. It had informed the court that several minors and women were allegedly being illegally confined there.

Following the PIL, the high court had set up a committee, comprising lawyers and DCW chief Swati Maliwal, to inspect the premises of the institute.

The high court also asked the committee to inspect eight other similar centres being run by Dixit in the national capital after the existence of these places was brought to the court's attention.

DWC rescued more than 45 minor girls from 2 different ashrams.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Monday inspected more ashrams of molestation-accused self-styled godman Baba Virendra Dev Dixit in Delhi and said he might be running a human trafficking racket.

A DCW team, including its chief Swati Maliwal, along with Ajay Verma, advocate appointed as amicus curiae by Delhi High Court in the matter, visited Dixit's ashram at Karawal Nagar in east Delhi and Nangloi in west Delhi and interacted with the inmates.

"There were six girls being kept in a similar situation like Vijay Vihar, Rohini and other ashrams of the Baba. The ashram was much smaller but had prison-like surroundings," said a statement by the DCW, referring to the Karawal Nagar ashram.

"Proper registers were not being maintained to record as to where did the girls come from and for how long have they been there."

"Three girls appeared to be minors. The CWC concerned has been requested to shift them to shelter homes to ensure their counselling. The locals informed that before the DCW visit, many girls had been removed from the premises," it added.

At the Nangloi ashram, the team interacted with around 15 women inmates but didn't find any minors. According to the DCW, locals said around 20 girls were taken away from the ashram in the morning.

"It appears that Baba is running a human trafficking racket. The CBI should urgently and simultaneously conduct raids at all ashrams of Dixit across India and close them down. By delaying the raids, Baba is getting time to cover up his action. All women and girls should be immediately rescued," Maliwal said.

Last week, the DCW had rescued more than 45 minor girls from two different ashrams run by Dixit where girls and women were allegedly being kept in illegal confinement in the name of religious preaching.

The Delhi High Court has ordered a CBI investigation into the matter and slammed the Delhi Police for not taking any action on various FIRs of girls and women being allegedly lured into an ashram in Rohini area on the pretext of spiritual guidance but then being raped.
