what if a serious gitch in the computer occured

and I wake up one day with no money at all

they will deny that I even existed

and cannot proved that I have S$1 million dollars in the posbbank

becos I din use a physical passbook to update regularly

that means I will wake up one day 1 million dollar porrer

along with many pple

do they have a backup?

then there will be a riot
scores of pple will be standing at many of the branches of the bank and hoping somehow can get the money back
and when that din happen
the pple will start to bash each other up out of anger
and then they will start to burn cars and overturn cars on the rodside
and then they will get angry with the govt
they will beat up all the dogs that they know
abd will beat up anyone will look like a minister
and will throw him ober the sg river
and more and more pple will march to the streets
will march to parleeement house and hope LHL will give them back their hard earn money....

adding on,normally, they will keep these backup data on media such as backup tape and locked in a safe.

Temporary glitches in their network would not set them back far as they have back up.
It is their bread and butter and in their own interest that they have all data backed up and copies stored offsite.

There are at least 2 working copies as well as other back up in DR sites as well as other areas over such old technology as tape back and using DVD or other media.

This will be very much dependant on what their BCP catered for. Usually fully equipped DR sites or co-located sites in the Eastern part of SG manned 24x7 by NOC stuff.

Just don't go draw money from 12am -2am from their ATMs on some Thursdays. Remember if its says under maintenance on the screen, the ATM from the same bank 20 minutes away is ALSO UNDER MAINTENANCE. ;)

i think they also hire CISCO for these backup medias to be transported to somewhere safe, like a vault. Not necessarily only in east side.

If one had $1 million they shouldn't bank with DBS/POSB:eek:

In Spore the depositor insurance only covers up to $20,000. Better off puting the money in the US where the insurance covers up to US$250,000. In Ireland the depositors insurance coverage is unlimited,

If you had 1 million in one bank and 100 million elsewhere, it wouldn't matter much.
If you only had 1 million and you put it all in one bank, you are probably not very smart.
Even if you didn't have a passbook, make sure you keep your latest statements and other records from the bank. If they have a glitch, you will need to produce the latest statement and ask for proof from their side of your withdrawal. Which they won't be able to produce if it was a glitch.
In the event that any bank tries to be funny and claim that it's not their fault, you can always go after individuals. That's why it's important to know who the individuals are behind any organisation that you have dealings with.

Yes, Cisco helps with the back up copies for certain banks but these do not have the latest transactions. Also, Cisco is also in the Eastern side. ;)

The DR site is always supposed to help automatically take over seamlessly.

Tape back up, etc on media are passive ways for disaster recovery. The latest technology (actually more than a few years ago already)deployed in some banks by the latest and greatest (especially embarrassing for IBM as they innovated many such technology) uses back up that zips across the network at a very fast speed whilst being online.

DLT tapes, etc are still of some use but they do not have the most current one given that certain time would have lapsed by the time the back up is taken.

They are good mainly as a timed archive and one of the old ways to back up and restore data.

They are not foolproof though, whilst working with a certain US bank in Singapore, in the midst of penetration tests, a server went down. They took out the tapes backed up a while ago to restore, the media inside was faulty and the data could not be read.

This part is very true, they tried to spin it as wow now you get $20k coverage. But what if you have more than 20k? If you have much more than this, rather park it elsewhere or in other countries.

Very true, there are still ATMS that, other than having EJ(Electronic Journaling) also has a physical record, as in a paper trail. The EJ is what is used to reconcile transactions should an ATM machine suddenly gets out of commission or the router/network suddenly goes down.

In Spore if you are a Sporean, you will get shafted if things go wrong. The system discriminates against locals

Look at how SIA treated Sporeans when one of their planes crashed. Sporeans had to sue them in the US to get compensation. If something happens to you during NS, you are on your own.

Alot of funny things are happening in Spore: unexplained floods, bank system failures, CPF rule changes,... If I had a substantial amount of money I'd be worried & seriously consider putting it in safer countries, which are giving a higher rate of return. I'd also diversify into safe stocks which give a healthy dividen.

Heck if you're a millionaire, why even bother staying in Spore:D

bro,

i am impressed that you have very good knowledge on the process.

i think i know you working in Citibank!ha...lol...;)

also, there is a CISCO building in the west along Corporation Rd leading to Jurong port...;)

Used to this...from reel tapes to DLT tapes to.....you are suppose to test the tapes...but if you have lazy bums doing the work..they just receive, signed for them, & place them in the SAFE, that is all...wether the contents are corrupted or the tapes are blank...you won't know...until you are caught OFF GUARD...this is what you get by paying for people, who have no feeling of belonging to the organization..especially you get FT's...worst!...

The backup didn't work.....ha ha ha...
