Safety measures taken after stabbing

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->
<!-- end left side bar --><!-- story content : start -->
WE REFER to Ms Goh Hui Mei's letter ('Stabbing incident: Install CCTVs in void decks, lifts'; April 24) and Ms Tan Shimin's Forum Online letter ('Aye to CCTVs in housing estates', last Tuesday).
We empathise with what Ms Goh's sister went through and we assure her that the town council and police are looking into her concerns.
Ms Goh had asked the town council to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and additional lighting at her block.
The council installed additional lighting at the void deck of her block on Nov 18 last year, to provide better lighting and a safer environment.
Following the incident, the police increased patrols in the neighbourhood, alerted residents to the incident and advised them to adopt crime preventive measures.
CCTV cameras are deployed where they can be effective. An extensive coverage of CCTV cameras in all public places may not be cost effective.
This is why the police and town council work closely together to look into how we can deploy CCTV cameras optimally to enhance the safety in estates, with other measures such as police presence and community watch groups.
The town council and police have since met Ms Goh and updated her on the safety measures we have carried out.
We thank her for her understanding and assure her that Tampines Town Council will continue to work with the police to make Tampines Town a safe place.
