Israeli soldier flees Brazil amid Gaza war crimes investigation

Jan. 6 (UPI) -- An Israeli soldier accused of committing war crimes in Gaza has fled Brazil where he was vacationing when the case was brought against him in the South American country.

The unidentified soldier is accused of participating in the mass demolition of civilian homes in Gaza amid Israel's war against Iran-backed Hamas in the Palestinian enclave.

The Brazilian authorities last week took up the case based on a complaint filed by the pro-Palestinian Hind Rajab Foundation, which said the alleged crimes "are part of a broader effort to impose unbearable living conditions on Palestinian civilians, constituting genocide and crimes against humanity under international law."

The soldier's escape from Brazil was confirmed in a Sunday statement from Israel's foreign ministry.

"Following an attempt last weekend by anti-Israeli elements to investigate a discharged Israeli soldier who visited Brazil, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar immediately activated the Foreign Ministry to ensure that the Israeli citizen was not in danger," the ministry said, CNN reported.

Sa'ar had the ministry's Consular Section and embassy in Brazil accompany the soldier "throughout the event until his swift and safe departure from Brazil," the ministry said, according to The Times of Israel.

The ministry framed the investigation as an anti-Israel assault targeting its soldiers abroad, warning those in uniform that some may seek to exploit their social media posts discussing their service.

The announcement came after The HRF issued an alert online that it had information that Israel was "attempting to smuggle" the Israeli soldier out of Brazil "because of investigative measures against him."

"This is not only a scandal but an affront to Brazil's sovereignty and rule of law," it said.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid lambasted the need for a soldier to flee a country where they were vacationing in the dark of night to evade investigation as "a huge political failure." He described the cause of the man's potential arrest as "fighting in Gaza."

"How did we get to the point where the Palestinians are better than the Israeli government in the international arena?" he said on X.

What is the Hind Rajab Foundation
Imagine you are the little 5 year old in the car with having to witness the Israeli soldiers in a tank killing your family and then you.

Killing of 5-year-old girl in Gaza sparks international condemnation as war continues

Israel denies responsibility for Hind Rajab's death.

It's January 29, 2024, and the fighting is raging in Gaza City. The voice on the telephone belongs to 5-year-old Hind Rajab, alone and trapped in a car with her extended family, talking to a Palestinian Red Crescent (PRCS) dispatcher.

"Do you want me to come and take you?" Rana Faqih, the dispatcher, replied.

"I'm so scared, please come. Please call someone to come and take me," Hind said.

The PRCS released the audio of the phone call, making an international appeal to return Hind to safety.

The appeal went viral, but neither Hind, nor the rest of the group with which she was travelling, survived. Twelve days later, her body was discovered in the charred remains of the vehicle.

The phone calls

Hind and members of her family – her aunt, uncle and four cousins – were evacuating from Gaza City that morning, heading south, when they came under fire. The first to call emergency services was Layan Hamadeh, Hind's 15-year-old cousin.

"They are shooting at us," Layan told dispatcher Omar al-Qam in audio recordings provided to ABC News by the PRCS. "They are shooting at us. The tank is next to me."

"Are you hiding?" Al-Qam asked.

"Yes, in the car, we're next to the tank," Layan said.

Al-Qam asked again whether Layan was in the car. Then heavy gunfire could be heard, followed by screams, and the line went silent.

Moments later, Hind picked up the phone.

"They are dead," she told Rana Faqih, the Palestinian Red Crescent dispatcher, based miles away in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank.

Faqih spoke to Hind for several hours, as the PRCS sent an ambulance with two emergency responders, Yousef Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, to rescue her. Faqih and Hind read the Quran together and played counting games to distract Hind from the devastation around her.

"It was a voice of a sad and terrified kid," Faqih told ABC News. "She told me, 'It's dark, I am afraid of darkness, it's really dark out there.' So I told her, 'Do you know how to play hide and seek?' She said yes. … But honestly, I didn't know that I will be counting with for 12 days," said Faqih, referring to how many days passed before Hind's body was found.

The ambulance never arrived. It, too, was discovered destroyed and the two responders dead 12 days later, barely a quarter of a mile from where Hind's vehicle was found.

The PRCS said they coordinated with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) when they sent the ambulance to rescue Hind. The IDF has denied that it had coordinated with the PRCS to create a safe passageway, saying they were not fighting in that area at the time.

Speaking to ABC News from Gaza City, Hind's mother, Wissam Hamada, recalled the moment she was able to speak to Hind, when the PRCS dispatcher patched her into the phone call to help calm her daughter. Hamada said Hind was a "very smart" and "ambitious" child who had dreams of becoming a dentist.

"God bless her," Hamada told ABC News. "And she didn't cry. Hind, when I was on the phone with her, my heart was burning and I was crying. She was very strong."

"I swear, I never imagined this for a moment," Hamada said of her daughter's death. "I never imagined for a second and it never crossed my mind for a minute that she would come back to me a martyr, not for a moment or a second."

'An unspeakable tragedy'

The U.S. State Department called for Israel to investigate the circumstances of Hind's death, with spokesperson Matthew Miller saying in February that it was "devastated by the reports about the death of Hind Rajab," and that we expect those results on a timely fashion and they should include accountability measures as appropriate."

Satellite imagery taken on January 29th at 15:31 local time and verified by ABC News captured four armoured military vehicles on a street roughly 200 yards north of where Hind's body was found. Despite the satellite imagery appearing to show the presence of Israeli military vehicles, Israel initially denied its forces were involved in Hind's death, declaring in a statement on Feb. 25: "It appears that IDF troops were not present near the vehicle or within firing range of the described vehicle in which the girl was found."

These are the last words of 6-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, who was stuck in a car with the bodies of her slain family members before she, too, was killed by Israeli forces.

1:06Palestinian here. I’ve always said that English subtitles can never fully convey the agony of the people of Gaza - their tone, their slang, the words they choose, the pain in their voices are simply untranslatable. This is a powerful example. When Hind said 'Amana' (أمانة), it wasn’t just "please" as translated. Amana is a shortened form of Amanat-Allah (أمانة الله), literally meaning "I beg you by God's trust." It’s a plea that carries a unique weight, almost placing a moral responsibility on the listener. It’s asking with a sense of sacred duty and deep emotional urgency.

----- And this plea of mercy to God is coming from a little 5- 6 year old girl

Mr Christopher De Souza:
In the Minister's view, is this a political, social or religious issue? Or is it a combination of all three? And if it is all three, how will we ensure that this foreign issue does not impact Singapore’s social compact and social cohesion? Thank you.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan: This is a longstanding complicated issue. You have mentioned that there may be a political, social, religious dimension, but there will also be historical, cultural, geographical and economic dimensions. Basically, there is no easy solution............. etc etc

Hind Rajab (Arabic: هند رجب; 3 May 2018 – 29 January 2024) was a five-year-old[2][a] Palestinian girl in the Gaza Strip who was killed by Israeli forces during the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, which also killed six of her family members and two paramedics coming to her rescue.
Rajab and her family were fleeing Gaza City when their vehicle was shelled, killing her uncle, aunt and three cousins, except for Rajab and another cousin who contacted the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to ask for help while noting that they were being attacked by an Israeli tank. The cousin was later also killed and Rajab was left stranded in the vehicle for hours on the phone, as paramedics from PRCS attempted to rescue her. Both Rajab and the paramedics were later also found killed on 10 February after an Israeli withdrawal.
Israel claimed that there weren't any troops present in the neighborhood and denied carrying out the attack.
However, this was refuted by investigations relying on satellite imagery and visual evidence, which concluded that a number of Israeli tanks were indeed present and one had likely fired 335 rounds on the car that Rajab and her family had been in, with tank operators being able to see that the car had civilians including children in it.[5] The Forensic Architecture investigation also concluded that an Israeli tank had also likely attacked the ambulance that came for Rajab.[5]
In the aftermath of the killing, Western media outlets were criticized for their coverage of the incident, including for not attributing who killed Rajab and for their adultification of her. American student protestors renamed overtaken buildings in honor of Rajab, drawing increased attention to the incident.

In July 2024, independent experts appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council stated Rajab's killing might amount to a war crime
