Singapore, July 26, 2009 - I BELIEVE in National Service. I am in total support of impressionable young boys going to the army where they learn to be responsible, disciplined and courageous men with strength of character and fortitude.
Especially fortitude.
All this is necessary to prepare them for marriage. They need the same discipline, courage and might to survive the perils of life with a wife.
In the military, a soldier may never need to see a real battlefield. The same does not apply in marriage.
Less than satisfactory performance as a husband is a guaranteed way to be thrown into real trenches. Trenches so deep, you may never see light again. That’s why good training is vital to help one navigate the difficult course of married life.
I strongly urge men to learn and develop skills that will serve them well.
One is deftness of hands and fingers. This comes in useful when your wife orders you to serve in the kitchen, such as making Italian meatballs.
Better you making the meatballs than the missus making a meatball out of you. Safety is foremost in such matters.
The modern man must not expect to have his dinner served. He must learn to take an active role in procuring it.
Bringing home the bacon is simply not enough. He must understand that helping to mince meat and shape it into balls is part of husbandhood.
Only then can peace reign for all mankind in the household.
