Policeman rejects bribery attempts by overstayer

SINGAPORE - A 21-year-old suspect who attempted to bribe a Police officer found himself being arrested for the charge of offering gratification to a public servant, in addition to the initial charges of Possession of Offensive Weapon, Possession of Contraband Cigarettes and Overstaying.
On Feb 12 at about 1.30am, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division came across the suspect walking along the road in the vicinity of Yishun Avenue 6.
The suspect turned heel and ran away when police approached, throwing away the sling bag that he was carrying. The officers gave chase and managed to detain the suspect, recovering the sling bag too.
The man possessed a sharp object, gambling paraphernalia, contraband cigarettes and cash amounting to about S$2,000.
While the search was being done by Corporal Aavram Karl Roch, the man offered him all the money for letting him go. Cpl Aavram rejected the offer without hesitation and warned the suspect that action would be taken against him for offering a bribe to a public servant.
Nonetheless, the suspect continued to try to bribe Cpl Aavram. His offer was rejected and he was brought back to Ang Mo Kio Police Division.
The suspect will be charged for Possession of an Offensive Weapon under Section 22(1)(a) of the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act, which carries an imprisonment term of 2 years and Overstaying under Section 15(3)(b) of the Immigration Act which carries an imprisonment term not exceeding 6 months and shall be punished with caning with not less than 3 strokes.
