SINGAPORE - A Singapore Police Force trainee has been hospitalised after he hit his head on the ground during a physical training exercise.

Hoe Qing Ren, 21, was taking part in a sprinting exercise when he collided with another trainee. He then fell to the ground and hit his head.

The incident occurred at the Home Team Academy off Old Choa Chu Kang Road.

His elder brother Qing An told The Straits Times that he had two clots in his brain and had undergone two operations at the National University Hospital to relieve the pressure.

Doctors were starting to take him off sedatives because of his stable condition. However, he remains unconscious.

The other trainee, Muhammad Haziq Haris, 20, injured his left shoulder

The Straits Times also reported that the commander of the Home Team Academy's Training Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police Zuraidah Abdullah, had suspended the sprinting exercise pending further review. Other aspects of physical training will continue.

The sprint exercise, also known as "Fun Relay", involves two trainees from opposite sides sprinting towards an instructor in the centre. It is meant to help trainees with the shuttle run station in the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT).

They should change it to 'Dumb Relay'.

no one stopped them when they were running towards each other??

I have sprinted before, if you loose concentration you may run into things you do not see & the other thing would be acceleration, you can't stop that quickly either.

But the one who designed the run, should have his or her head knocked...:p

Accidents do happen in any form of training and sports. Instead of making the sad incident into a mockery of sorts, let us all show sympathy to the families concerned. How would we feel if the incident concern one of our own loved ones.
The Commander of the Academy have done the right thing by suspending the relay concerned.
I wish the two trainees a speedy recovery. Hope the pysical training instructors will learn something from this unfortunate accident and ensure that there won't be a recurrence in the near future.

If accidents could be prevented, they wouldn't be called "accidents" anymore. They'd be renamed "purposedents".
