Police remind shoppers to be vigilant during GSS

SINGAPORE - Singaporeans should be extra vigilant and alert to their surroundings, especially when shopping during the Great Singapore Sale from May 30 to Jul7 27.
That is the advice from the police, who said on Tuesday that large crowds can be expected at major malls, and this presents opportunities for criminals to strike. The police said criminals are "known to steal exposed items such as mobile phones and wallets from bags; and unzipping or slitting the bags of unsuspecting victims."
"At times, they may have accomplices who help to distract or block the view of the victim to facilitate the theft."
"Some culprits deliberately bump or jostle into an unsuspecting victim in a crowd and commit theft in the process," said the police advisory.
Members of the public are advised to avoid exposing cash, valuables, or jewellery in public areas which might draw unnecessary attention and avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket. The police also advises parents not to adorn your children with excessive jewellery so that they don't become easy targets.
The police also reminded Singaporeans not to leave valuables unattended on trolleys or strollers while shopping, not use valuables such as mobile phones to reserve seats while having meals and arrange for someone to look after your valuables while ordering food.
When strangers create a commotion, do not be distracted. Check your valuables immediately someone bumps into you accidentally or spills something onto you.
Crime prevention against shop theft
The police would also like to remind retail outlets to be extra vigilant against shop thieves during this period.
Retailers are encouraged to implement the following measures against shop theft:
a) Display posters or signage to deter shop theft;
b) Ensure a good line of sight for the displays by using an appropriate shop layout;
c) Keep expensive merchandise in locked display cabinets;
d) Install CCTVs with a recording system; and
e) Deploy adequate security personnel to patrol the premises for increased visual deterrence.
Crime prevention against outrage of modesty
With the expected large crowds at shopping centres during this period, members of the public, especially females, are advised to stay vigilant.
The following are some precautions that can be taken to minimise the risks of becoming a victim:
a) Be wary of strangers who approach you in crowded areas;
b) Stay close to your friends or move around in groups when in crowded places;
c) Be aware and alert to your surroundings. If someone stands exceptionally close to you, or if you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to a crowded area or call the police for assistance;
d) Do not nap whilst travelling on public transport, where possible; and
e) If you are molested, immediately shout for help. Dial '999' to notify the police as soon as possible.
