When a 75-year-old man was being interviewed by the police, he attempted to bribe his way out to the tune of $500. Instead, he was arrested.
The incident took place on Tuesday when Corporal Muhammad Rasul and Sergeant Saliman from Rochor Neighbourhood Police Centre were conducting anti-crime rounds in the vicinity of St George's Road and saw the suspect behaving suspiciously.
Upon checking, the officers found 16 cartons of contraband cigarettes on the man.
As he was being interviewed, the subject offered Corporal Muhammad Rasul $500 in exchange for his release.
He then took out $209 from his shirt pocket and offered the money to the officer. Corporal Muhammad Rasul rejected the bribe and arrested the suspect.
The money and contraband cigarettes were seized as case exhibits, and the suspect has been referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau and Singapore Customs.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
