MALAYSIA - He lured his victims by offering them jobs with a salary too good to resist.
The 29-year-old salesman was allegedly involved in at least five rape cases in the Klang Valley, three in Kuala Lumpur and two in Selangor.
But the long arm of the law finally caught up with him when he was arrested at a house in Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday morning, The Star reported.
The man, who was alone in the house when police raided the place, has been remanded for four days to facilitate investigations.
City Criminal Investigation Department chief Ku Chin Wah said: "We believe more women could have fallen prey to his staged job interviews, but they did not lodge any report."
The arrest was made with the help of the public. He urged other victims of the rapist to come forward to help police in their investigations.
The man's terror trail came to light after two women filed police reports claiming that they were raped and robbed during these "interviews".
Going through their records, police found that another woman, 19, was raped and robbed in 2010, with the same modus operandi being used.
Earlier reports said the man asked his victims to attend the "interviews" in a budget hotel after they put in their applications for sales promoter jobs via a website.
In an e-mail reply to their applications, the women were offered RM400 (S$160) per day for the job and asked to meet the "interviewer" in a hotel room.
Mr Ku said the man asked the women to register for the hotel room under their names to avoid having to give his own name.
"He would tell the victims that he had left his identity card at home and could not register."
Mastermind
Meanwhile, the police arrested the alleged mastermind behind the killing of a security van driver. About RM1.2 million was also missing from the van.
Mohd Hafizuddin Zainal Abidin, 24, worked as a route planner for a security firm for the last two years. He allegedly made use of his expertise to stage the killing on Sept 18. The driver of the van, Mr Hasnul Hafis Saad, 28, was shot dead in Taiping, Perak.
Mohd Hafizuddin was arrested in northern Perlis state at 11am on Wednesday. He has been detained for seven days to assist with investigations.
Prior to his arrest, police also nabbed six suspects - three men and three women - and they were in remand for seven days, until today. Police also retrieved RM7,250 in cash and 550 baht (S$20), a Casio watch and motorcycle keys.
