<!-- story content : start --> A POLICE officer who used the force's database to check the confidential particulars of three people he knew was sentenced to 14 months' jail on Thursday. In sentencing Sylvester Marian, 45, an inspector, District Judge Paul Quan said that a jail term was warranted in this case. Marian's lawyer, who pleaded for a fine, said his client would be filing an appeal against the jail term. Marian was granted bail of $30,000 pending the appeal hearing. Over a six-month period in 2005, Marian assessed a police computer system 10 times to run unauthorised checks on the addresses and criminal records of three people. The offences were uncovered by accident during a 2006 probe by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau over allegations that he had accepted a bribe.
