SHAH ALAM: A 16-year-old boy was among three robbers shot dead by police after a high-speed car chase here. The three were gunned down at 4.15am yesterday, not long after police rammed into their getaway car. They were suspected to be a gang preying on petrol stations. After the car turned turtle, the robbers got out and tried to attack the policemen with parang, resulting in the police opening fire.

No escape: The scene of the shooting after police rammed the suspects' getaway car yesterday.

The dead were Mohd Shamil Hafiz Shafie, 16, Mohd Khairul Nizam Tuah, 20, and Mohd Hanafi Omar, 22, acting Selangor police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegam told reporters at the scene. A police team patrolling the area had run into the suspects moments after they robbed a petrol kiosk about 2km away.

The getaway car which was stolen in Jinjang contained two cash registers, three parang and stolen items. Police believe the robbers, from Cheras, were also involved in other petrol station robberies in Bukit Subang and the latest one in Glenmarie. “The modus operandi of the group was to target remote petrol stations. They would move in when there was no one around,” Thaiveegam said.

He added that the suspects were believed to have robbed at least three petrol stations in the area in seven days. Asked if the robbers were also involved in other robberies in Kuala Lumpur, Puchong or Subang, Thaiveegam said police had not ruled out the possibility. The bodies were sent to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang for post-mortem.

Trio shot dead by police were seasoned criminals

PETALING JAYA: The trio shot dead by police on Saturday were involved in criminal activities for several months and have never been caught before. Selangor acting police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said the three men, Mohd Shamil Hafiz Shafie, 16, Mohd Khairul Nizam Tuah, 20, and Mohd Hanafi Omar, 22, were involved in at least three armed robberies over five days last week in Selangor.

The latest heist was at the Caltex petrol station on Saturday located about 300m from the entrance of the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club. The trio had previously struck in the Bukit Subang and Shah Alam areas. At about 4am, a police patrol team spotted the trio running out from the petrol station armed with parang and stolen items and gave chase. Thaiveegan said when the police team caught up with the trio, the suspects refused to stop.

The police car then rammed into the suspect’s car which turned turtle.
“They rushed to attack the policemen with the parang, forcing the police to open fire,” Thaiveegan said. “The CCTV footage at the petrol station in Glenmarie showed them storming into the petrol station, holding up a staff member and grabbing money from the cash register machine. “Their movements were those of seasoned criminals,” he added.

Thaiveegan said further checks revealed that the getaway car which was stolen in Jinjang five months ago contained two cash registers, three parang and other stolen items. He also did not rule out the possibility that the trio were involved in armed robberies or other serious crimes in the city centre and elsewhere in the Klang Valley.

It is learnt that Mohd Shamil and Mohd Khairul, both from Kota Damansara, were jobless. The duo befriended Mohd Hanafi two years ago when he ran away from his home in Kuala Kangsar soon after his father died. Mohd Hanafi used to work at a provision shop in Kota Damansara where he is said to have met the other two.

Families of two youths shot dead by cops lodge reports

PETALING JAYA: Family members of the two youths shot dead by police last Saturday have lodged reports, alleging that they were killed in cold blood. The families of Muhammad Shamil Hafiz, 15, and Mohd Hairul Nizam Tuah, 20, said they believed that the two youths, together with another, had been shot dead at close range, rather than from a distance as claimed by police.

The families also disputed claims by police that both were involved in criminal activities. Yesterday, they lodged their reports at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters, accompanied by their lawyer N. Surendran. Surendran said based on initial post mortem findings, they believe the youths were “murdered”. “All three had similar gun shot wounds. One to the forehead and another to the chest.

“If they were running at the police, then the entry point of the bullet would have been different, “ he said. Muhammad Shamil’s mother Nor Hafizah Mad Razali, 36, said her son would have been celebrating his 16th birthday today. “We would have been together celebrating instead of talking about his death,” said Nor Hafizah before breaking down in tears.

Mohd Hairul’s sister Norhaliza said she believed her brother was assaulted before being shot. “My brother had a black mark on his right eye. If Mohd Hairul had been shot while rushing at the police as they claimed, how did he get the black eye?” she said. The three were gunned down in Shah Alam last Saturday, suspected to be a gang preying on petrol stations in Bukit Subang and Shah Alam.

It was reported that the youths had rushed to attack the policemen with parang, forcing them to open fire. Petaling Jaya police chief Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said they would hand the reports over to the state police contingent headquarters for further action. The family of the third youth Mohd Hanafi Omar, 22, is expected to lodge a police report soon.
