The police chief of Usu, a small city in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is being investigated for keeping twin sisters as his concubines after someone revealed it on the Internet early this week.
The disciplinary department was alerted by the online post and has begun probing into the case, said an official with the Tacheng Prefecture Discipline Commission. Usu is in the jurisdiction of Tacheng.
The result will be made public after the investigation concludes, the official added.
Qi Fang was promoted as the chief and Party secretary of Usu City Public Security Bureau in June 2011. Five months later he brought the twin sisters into the bureau, the post said.
The elder sister known was appointed deputy director of the bureau's traffic police division and patrol police division. She was previously an actress in another county, the post said.
The younger sister was employed as police assistant, the post said.
Qi allegedly rented a high-rise apartment in a downtown area for the two sisters and paid the rent with the bureau's funds.
But another policewoman said the two sisters are not twins. One is 28 years old; the other 26.
Another officer surnamed Wu also ruled out the possibility that Qi kept the two sisters as his concubines. "The sisters previously worked in an art troupe in Toli County. They were recruited for their performing talent," Wu said.
They were promoted quickly because they worked hard and were good at dealing with people, especially ethnic minorities, Wu said. He thought their promotions had nothing to do with Qi.
