Shanghai police detained 19 people for illegally selling liquefied gas cylinders to restaurants in Pudong District and confiscated more than 380 cylinders, police said today.
The main suspect, surnamed Wang, hired three men in May to buy liquefied gas from north China at 5,700 yuan (US$902) per ton and sell to their Shanghai customers at 6,300 yuan to 6,500 yuan per ton.
They filled gas cylinders themselves and sold them to migrant workers and restaurants for 15 yuan to 18 yuan per kilogram.
Police received a tip about the ring's illegal business last Tuesday and raided their hideout on Jinhai Road three days later.
Officers found most of the confiscated cylinders were bought from recycling stations across the city. They are substandard in quality and rare hazardous.
