Police arrest suspected loan shark runners
Posted: 12 January 2012 2030 hrs
SINGAPORE: Police have arrested three suspects for acting as runners for loan sharks.
In the first case, a 21-year-old male suspect was caught on Wednesday, after police acted on reports of loan shark-related harassment in Senja Road housing estate in December last year.
Another suspect linked to the cases, a 19-year old male, was nabbed on the same day.
Police believe they committed several cases of loanshark harassment in Senja Road, Buangkok, Rivervale and Tampines public housing estates.
The second case happened at about 11.00 pm on Wednesday.
Police said the suspect was seen behaving suspiciously at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).
When officers approached him, the 41-year-old man admitted that he is a debtor-turned-runner who was performing ATM transactions on behalf of the loan sharks.
Police seized a mobile phone believed to contain debtors' records and two ATM cards from him.
The three suspects will be charged in court on Friday.
