Police arrest man for suspected involvement in fatal hit-and-run
Posted: 12 August 2011 2038 hrs

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for his involvement in a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred early Friday morning along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) towards Tuas, after the Eng Neo Avenue exit.

Police said that this is the second arrest of drivers involved in fatal hit-and-run accidents within a span of four days.

Police said that early Friday morning, a 72-year-old taxi-driver had stopped his taxi along the road shoulder of the PIE to retrieve a plastic bag from the boot as his passenger was about to vomit.

While the taxi driver was outside his vehicle, a motor car collided into him and drove on without stopping. Due to the impact, the taxi driver was flung several metres away and landed on the grass verge next to the road shoulder.

As a result of the accident, the taxi driver sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said among the debris found at the accident scene was a vehicle licence number plate, believed to have fallen from the car that collided with the taxi driver.

And it was with this crucial piece of evidence, traffic police officers were able to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him at his residence within four hours.
