Police in the city of Xuzhou in Jiangsu Province have detained a man for allegedly selling firearms over the internet.

The suspect is said to be an academic at a local university.

Police say they've confiscated 225 gun barrels, on top of other equipment used to produce firearms in the man's home.

Authorities allege he was producing air rifles, which police contend could be modified to produce enough power to be lethal.

The man's alleged supplier and business partner has also been detained.

They face anywhere from 3 to 10-years in prison if convicted.

Possession of fire arms is virtually illegal in China, including air guns.

Only farmers living in rural areas can obtain permission to own a gun to protect their livestock.
