SINGAPORE - Police on Thursday arrested a 27-year-old woman and 34-year-old man believed to be involved in at least six cheating cases.
In a statement, the police said on Friday that it had, since September last year, received several reports of people duped into buying mobile phones.
Instead of mobile phones, the victims received packages containing metal plates.
In all the reported cases, the victims said they had come across online advertisements selling mobile phones, and had arranged to meet the seller for the transaction.
During the meeting, the 27-year-old woman would pass the victim a sealed packaged box purportedly containing the mobile phone, and collect payment before leaving the location.
The victims discovered only later that instead of phones, plates were packed in the packages.
Officers from Clementi Division established the identities of the two suspects and nabbed them at about 2.50 pm in Woodlands.
The officers also seized several empty mobile phone boxes and five metal plates.
The offence of cheating carries a fine and a jail term, which may extend to 10 years.
