SINGAPORE - Police have arrested nine men in two separate cases of illegal gambling.

In the first case, officers from Bedok Police Division mounted a four-hour operation yesterday which began at 10pm.

They later apprehended two men aged 43 and 54, in a Geylang shophouse.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 53-year-old suspect was involved in assisting to manage the illegal gambling den while the other suspect was a patron.

After conducting a search, the police seized 21 modified computers and cash amounting to about $160 as case exhibits.

Both men will be charged in court on Oct 12.

In the second case, officers from Jurong Police Division arrested seven men after raiding a flat at Tah Ching Road yesterday at around 10.30pm.

The suspects aged between 17 and 50 were placed under arrest for suspected involvement in operating and gambling at an illegal gambling den.

Two of the men, aged 17 and 50, are believed to be ones managing the illegal gambling operation while the remaining five are the patrons.

Nine sets of computers, two modems, one switch box and $1,600 in cash were seized as case exhibits after a raid.

Investigations are still on-going against the seven suspects.

If found guilty of gambling in a common gaming house, they face a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Any person found guilty of operating an illegal gambling den can be fined between $5,000 and $50,000, and jailed up to three years.

Why they arrest people for gambling?

Didnt they have state sanctioned casinos?
