SINGAPORE : Strengthening tripartism during an upturn, and calling on all workers, enterprises and sectors to work towards a cheaper, better, faster economy - these will be central to this year's May Day celebrations which will take place in a more upbeat year, said the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).
The centrepiece of the celebrations is the May Day Rally, to be attended by some 1,400 people.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will address the tripartite partners at the rally.
NTUC President John De Payva said: "We were able to upturn the downturn by cutting cost and saving jobs. And because of our strong tripartite efforts, we managed to avoid record retrenchment and help workers who lost their jobs to find employment.
"As we ride the upturn, we will reinforce the strong bipartite and tripartite relationships with management and government partners."
He urged employers to share the gains with their workers during the upturn.
"This is to ensure working people of all collars, ages and nationalities are not left behind as we stay ahead of the global competition and capture opportunities, so that all workers can earn a better living, and live a better life," said the NTUC president.
And to recognise those who have played a key role in helping workers ride the recent downturn, there will be a new special Upturn the Downturn Award for 15 unionists, companies and individuals.
Other highlights during the May Day celebrations include the annual awards for a record number of 88 individuals, companies and tripartite partners for their contributions to the labour movement.
In the spirit of the celebrations, NTUC will launch a special month-long campaign to reward members with special deals and promotions.
It is part of NTUC's 49th anniversary in the month of May.
