PM Lee: S'pore must raise productivity, rejuvenate population
SINGAPORE has reached a turning point in its economic development and must work smart to transform its economy, the Prime Minister said yesterday in his annual Chinese New Year message.
Lee Hsien Loong, now in his sixth year as Prime Minister, said that the country cannot keep importing foreign workers as liberally as before because it is running out of space.
But that 'does not mean less competition for Singaporeans, because our real competitors are out there in the world and not here among us', Mr Lee said, noting that recent improvements in the economy meant that full-year GDP fell only 2.1 per cent, compared with 10 per cent in the first quarter of last year. Unemployment was also kept low, he said.
The twin challenges now facing Singapore are upgrading productivity while rejuvenating its population, Mr Lee said. 'We also need to preserve a core of citizens who are born here and have grown up here, who will maintain and pass on the values and spirit of our nation.'
Singapore's total fertility rate last year was the lowest ever at 1.23, down from 1.28 in 2008, and the Prime Minister said that he is worried about this year, noting that some Chinese couples prefer not to have children in the Tiger zodiac year.
