We have a Prime Minister who can’t keep his family together but we trust him to hold us in unity.
We have a President who cared more about his international affiliations to dubious parasitical world bodies than the national concern of his countrymen over it.
We have a Health Minister who supported illogical and harmful health policies laid out by WHO during the Covid-19 pandemic, instituted inhumane coercive health policies to potentially compromised the health of millions, over fear and greed.
We have a Deputy Prime Minister who abetted these health policies, ended up conclusively wrong after 4 years in all respects, and gets promoted to be the next-in-line to hold the reins of leadership.
We have a Foreign Minister who compromised our country’s long-standing policy stance of providing humanitarian assistance in regions of conflict and advocacy of peaceful cooperation and constructive diplomacy, by taking side in Ukraine-Russia conflict (morally wrong side for that), and in early days of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, showing outright bias and duplicity, by refusing to condemn Israeli murderous military actions while condemning Hamas Oct 7 attacks.
We have a Law Minister who can bend constitutional laws in order to cement our new President’s hold on his new-found power, and bring a potential law suit against him and Foreign Minister right into Parliament chambers so that party cronyism can triumphed over public judiciary. And if anyone else said otherwise, he used the laws made to combat misinformation to quell the people who cast aspersions on his own public misinformation campaign about his public image (well thanks to that, he has very little of that image to be spoken of now).
Even the last respectable member of this Elites, who showed at least some independence of thought and courage previously, chose to let his teachers take the umbrage, in order to “educate” our young about Israeli-Palestinian conflict, when few in this country truly understood the historical complexities of it all, much less sieve through the decades of distortion of facts propagated by mass media (hyping attacks on Israeli while playing down or drowning the injustices suffered on a daily basis by the Palestinians). Looks like MOE is where ministers go lose their balls but get their promotion.
We have a ruling party who wants to “fix the Opposition” instead of fixing the country’s problems. Hell, they can’t even fix their own party’s problems.
We have an Opposition who wants to check and balance the ruling party, but could not bring itself to be educated enough or grow enough chutzpah, to check and verify and question one of the most serious constitutional travesties committed by the ruling party during Covid period, and remained unaddressed even til this day.
In a strange but not surprising way, the impasse and issue that faced our democratic system and governance isn’t too different from what US is facing now. They have 2 parties but no viable candidates within both who can truly lead the country, we’ve the ruling party and opposition party but no true leaders amongst both. They have a true independent candidate but the mainstream media tarred him into political oblivion, we’ve independent thinking people but all POFMA-ed into silence.
Our founding Father Lee Kuan Yew once said “he will jump up from his grave” to make sure Singapore thrives. Even if that is just a political gimmick or a metaphor, I can feel his conviction and dedication to make sure his “baby”, this country which he built, continue to flourish.
In contrary I can only feel a nauseating sense of disgust when I see Lee Hsien Loong wiping his tears away when announcing his pending “abdication” of his PM post. There’s nothing real, concrete and morally consistent with this government to warrant my trust, be it tears or threats.
However, there is a growing global political movement and awareness rising since Covid 4 years ago. More people has begun to realize that our governments may not necessary act in citizenry’s interests, and as the lies are exposed one after another, more people are beginning to do their own “homework” instead of allowing themselves to be spoonfed information from mainstream media.
I am observing the US-PE2024 with keen interest, not only because our country is a microcosm of what is playing out in US elections, but also because if US righted itself, democratically, and its citizenry somehow finds the courage to choose a leader who have vision, integrity, and compassion instead of simply choosing the least of 2 established evils, and the moral integrity of the US restored to post WW2 era through consistent leadership, domestically and internationally, Singapore can also likewise do the same, ridding ourselves the baggages of neoconservatism established during Covid and the rampant cronyism permeating through the rungs of our plutocratic leadership, when the Truth of what really happened over these past 4 years empowers the citizenry through a new political awareness and see through government propaganda disguised as truth.
And maybe, just maybe, our founding father need not rise up from his grave to salvage the country.
Because we, as a nation, as a people, as a collective, can do so on our own free will and volition.
