Plumber hit driver, jailed
<!-- by line --> By Khushwant Singh
AFTER an evening of beer in June last year, Soh Lai Seng punched a bus driver over the fare. The 56-year-old plumber was jailed for a month on Monday. A district court heard that Soh had drunk some 18 bottles of beer with three friends at a hawker centre in Chinatown from 3pm on June 27. At 9.30pm, he decided to go home and hailed a bus near New Bridge Centre. He dropped 90 cents into the coin box. The driver, Mr Tan Ah Kiat, 39, a Malaysian, said it was insufficient as the minimum fare for a cash-paying commuter on an air-conditioned bus is $1. Soh, who claimed his bus fare was $1, became furious with the driver for making an issue over 10 cents. In the ensuing argument, Soh punched the head of the Singapore Bus Services (SBS) driver.
