On two occasions in 2019, a teenager entered Nanyang Technological University's (NTU) campus and took pictures of men while they showered.
Today (June 8), Lau Jun Wei — now 20 — was sentenced to 21 months probation after he pleaded guilty to one count of harassment and two counts of criminal trespass according to the Straits Times.
Lau was neither a student nor an employee at the university at the time of the offences.
Curious about what men looked like
According to court documents seen by Mothership, Lau went to NTU on Feb. 24, 2019, to a meet a friend.
While on campus, he went to use the toilet at around 5:20pm and realised that somebody was showering in one of the cubicles.
Lau was "curious as to how men looked like when they showered," wrote court documents, and placed his phone over the top of the cubicle door, taking two photos of the naked man.
He also recorded a video of the man.
About two months later on Apr. 21, Lau was at NTU after staying over at a friend's room the previous night, and went to a toilet at a residential hall at around 12:30pm.
Once again he heard a student showering in one of the cubicles, and decided to take photos of the man with the same method he used in February.
Lau took two photos of the student — who stayed at the residential hall — while he showered.
Caught in the act
However, this time, he was caught in the act when the student's friend spotted Lau holding his phone over the top of the cubicle door.
The friend stopped Lau from leaving and informed the student he had been photographed. The student then called the police.
Court documents state that the student felt so alarmed, distressed, and traumatised by Lau's actions that he eventually moved out of the residential hall.
For each criminal trespass charge, Lau could have been jailed for up to three months and fined up to $1,500.
For his charge of harassment, Lau could have been jailed for up to six months and fined up to $5,000.
Lau was neither a student nor an employee at the university at the time of the offences.
