Glorious Mission Online, the first online game developed by the People's Liberation Army, became available to the public on Aug. 1, Army Day in China. The game was first created in 2011 to train soldiers and has been modified into an online game with unique features such as China's first aircraft carrier and the disputed islands in the East China Sea called Diaoyu by China and Senkaku by Japan, according to the Communist Party mouthpiece People's Daily.
The PLA's Nanjing Military Area Command and Giant Interactive Group developed a stand-alone edition of the game in October 2011 and distributed to soldiers to hone their combat skill. The edition has been included into the army's training subjects.
The military and the developer added more battle scenes, weapons and features to enrich the online edition. The new features include a war against Japan, an earthquake rescue mission, a map of China's first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, and scenes of the disputed islands. Players can team up as a group to play against the computer or as two groups to fight each other.
The game's developers modeled the movements of the game's characters after serving members of the country's special forces. Soldiers on active duty also helped to voice the characters. The online edition was tested by the Nanjing military unit's officers and soldiers as well as PLA academy cadets.
The online game was made available for download on the anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army in 1927 and aims to promote patriotism and boost recruitment.
