MEMBERS from two rival factions of the opposition Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) were charged in court on Thursday with rioting over last September's brawl infront of Changi Road building.

The two groups appeared separately within 21/2 hours of each other in a district court.

The first seven are: vice president Ali Asjadi, 53, Nazrudy Nasrul, 27, Azhar Ali, 44, PKMS secretary-general Malik Ismail, 40, Mazlan Soep, 33, vice president I Ismail Mohamed Yaacob, 44, and Abdul Hamid Ahmad, 59.

All are alleged to have been part of the group to cause hurt to five men from a breakaway group.

Abdul Hamid, a caretaker of PKMS Building, is accused of being armed with a chisel at 12.18pm last Sept 3 (09).

The breakaway group - Hasan Nordin, 65, Mohamad Yusof Jaafar, 43, Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Said, 68, Ramli Mohamad and his twin Ramlan, 49 - are alleged to have caused hurt to Ali, Azhar, Mazlan and Abdul Hamid while being members of an unlawful assembly on Sept 3 (09).

Abdul Hamid, who is out on $15,000 bail, is alleged to have been armed with a chisel during the rioting.

Mohamed Salleh, also offered $15,000 bail, is alleged to have been armed with a wooden mallet at the time.

Mr Subhas Anandan is acting for the seven while the other five are represented by Mr Tan Cheng Kiong.

Pre-trial conference dates have been set for April 12 and 19 for the two respective groups.

If convicted, Hamid and Salleh face a jail term of up 10 years, while the rest each faces a jail term of up to seven years and caning.

i have a legal question. if all 12 are charged with rioting (a criminal charge), then why must they be trial separately and defended by different lawyers?

any expert here can help solve this puzzle?

Here is your answer, somebody came prepared with chisel and mallet to make wood work out of the "enemies".

"Abdul Hamid, who is out on $15,000 bail, is alleged to have been armed with a chisel during the rioting.

Mohamed Salleh, also offered $15,000 bail, is alleged to have been armed with a wooden mallet at the time."

But both of them are represented by Subhas. the other 5 kenna hammered and chiselled ones are represented by another lawyer. but aren't their charges all the same?

Sorry, still doesn't answer my question leh

MIWs want to prevent PKMS continue to supply Malay candidates to opp camps. Thus the best way is to charge them.
