SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he is confident the Buddhist community here will help maintain a harmonious, cohesive and compassionate society in Singapore.
Speaking at the opening of the Singapore Buddhist Federation's building on Friday morning, he noted that Buddhists form one of the largest religious groups here, and they contribute to the general mood of tolerance and understanding in society.
Mr Lee said that this has helped to maintain the nation's racial and religious harmony.
He added that Buddhism is growing in Singapore and is reaching out to younger Singaporeans through Facebook and community services.
They are also making overseas visits and linking up with Buddhist communities in other parts of the world.
On the Singapore Buddhist Federation, the Prime Minister noted that as the apex umbrella body for the Buddhist community, it has taken on a strong community role.
It runs schools and student care centres, clinics and a rehabilitation centre.
It has also raised funds for various causes including SARs, earthquake relief and for cultural organisations.
Mr Lee said that all these efforts have benefited Singaporeans regardless of faith.
