The COVID-19 outbreak was an excellent opportunity to cover lost ground by showing off its leadership capabilities. Sadly, and naturally, leadership was found wanting.

On the contrary, it shot its own foot with idiotic utterings, bizarre actions and inertia. The chief clown created the greatest faux pas with the “don’t wear masks if you are well” and “Corona is less serous than SARS” nonsense. His minions either carried his balls or kept silent.

Even the medical fraternity, including the SMC, kept quiet for fear of offending him until 4 brave senior doctors spoke up in an advisory, albeit after much soul searching over a number of days.

They PAP leadership is accredited by PAP to be the best you can find on this planet.

The statement that masks are not necessary comes from the leading experts in the field so PM Lee is absolutely spot on in providing sound advice so as to prevent unnecessary paranoia.

And the stats show that the corona virus is nothing more than a mild infection for most so he is also correct in stating that it is less serious than SARS.

Ah Sam, who are the leading experts? It's how you frame the question-would wearing a mask prevent infection? A binary respond would suffice-Yes or No.

Jimmy Whitworth, professor of international public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, told The Independent: “There’s little evidence that they are very effective. They’re more beneficial if you have a virus and don’t want to pass it on than to prevent catching anything.

People touch their faces often, allowing bacteria to get close to the eyes, although masks do at least prevent people touching their mouths, he said. But masks do need to be changed frequently.

“Better ways of preventing infection are washing your hands with warm water and soap, not touching your eyes or nose, and if you cough, cough into a tissue that you put in the bin.”

Prof Whitworth said he himself would not use a mask even if coronavirus came to London.

Even more effective than masks, experts say, is regular hand-washing, coughing or sneezing into one’s elbow rather than sharing with the entire subway car, and other commonsense measures that people typically employ during flu season and beyond.

In addition, the term “human-to-human” transmission is not synonymous with airborne – so the type of contact that a mask would protect against is not necessarily the way this virus moves from person to person.

Are we all losing our minds, though? What’s the point of surgical masks that we’re made to wear if we go to the doctor and have cold or flu symptoms? Turns out, surgical masks are useful if you are sick—but not so much if you’re trying not to get sick. Just let that sink in when you buy the masks. Use them if you or your kid have a cold — just don’t expect them to be a shield for everything else.

But, do those masks really work?

The public wearing surgical masks has become a defining image of large disease outbreaks. The current coronavirus outbreak isn’t any different. But, these masks don’t really help in stopping a respiratory virus from spreading.

“Surgical masks will not prevent your acquiring diseases. Rather, surgical masks are typically used by surgeons to protect their patients from their mouth-borne germs — but those masks don't work to prevent inhaling diseases,” Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, and the medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases told Fox News.

hanor, suffice it to say that masks are only good for the giver - not for the receiver.
hence and since flying off the shelves, condoms are better as they protect both giving and receiving end!
