STOLEN: File contained personal financial info of former AFC president
Kong Lee Toong, a salesman with a pet products company, pleaded not guilty
KUALA LUMPUR: THE spouse of a former finance director with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) was charged with stealing a file containing financial information from the confederation's office in Bukit Jalil two months ago.
Kong Lee Toong, 35, the husband of Amelia Gan, was charged with another who is still at large, of committing the offence on July 31.
The file allegedly contained personal information, such as banking transactions, related to former AFC president Mohamed Hammam.
Kong, a salesman with a pet products company, pleaded not guilty.
Authorities are still looking for Gan, who is believed to be out of the country.
It was earlier reported that Hammam, a Qatari, whose life ban from football was overturned in a sports court in July, was accused of using AFC's bank accounts to conduct his private affairs.
It was also reported that AFC had lodged a police report over missing documents which are reportedly related to a large payment made to Hammam, who is fighting corruption allegations, in 2008.
It was further stated that Hammam had complained that documents detailing "personal payments" were stolen from his office, and were included in an internal AFC audit carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Yesterday, deputy public prosecutor Kee Wei Lon proposed bail of RM10,000 in one surety. He also asked for Kong's passport to be surrendered and for him to report to the nearest police station twice a month.
Defence lawyer K.K. Lim said his client was a salesman with Premier Pet Products and earned between RM4,000 and RM5,000 monthly. He pleaded for a lower bail.
Magistrate Nur Azura Murah set bail at RM7,000. She ordered Kong to surrender his passport and report to the nearest police station every two weeks. She fixed Oct 17 for mention. Kong posted bail.
Lawyer Datuk Mohamad Bustaman Abdullah held a waching brief for AFC.
