Perfect 10 for 100 couples

IPOH: Many Chinese view 10.10.10 as a perfect day to get married as the number 10 represents “completion and perfection”. Assistant registrar Datuk Ooi Foh Sing quoted the Chinese idiom “shi quan shi mei”, which means perfect and flawless.
He said 100 couples would solemnise their marriage at the Ipoh Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association on the auspicious day. “The association limited it to 100 to correspond with 10.10.10, a special day that comes once in a hundred years,” he said.
The ceremony would start at 10.10am, said Ooi. In Klang, 288 couples would get married at the Klang Hokkien Association on Sunday, said the association’s assistant registrar Tan Gee Shim. “The Chinese believe 10 is an ideal number and will bring good luck and marital bliss to couples,” she said.
In Kuala Lumpur, 365 couples would register their marriage at the Selangor and Federal Territory Hainanese Association at the Thean Hou Temple, said the association’s assistant executive secretary Goh Hiau Lee. But “perfect 10” may not be so perfect for those who are superstitious and would like to avoid getting married in the Year of the Tiger, a symbol of ferocity.
A total of 339 couples registered their marriages at the Klang Hokkien Association, and 565 registered their marriages at the Selangor and Federal Territory Hainanese Association on 09.09.09 and Tan and Goh cited superstition as the reason for “perfect nine” beating “perfect 10”. The number nine signifies eternity, and the Year of the Ox last year was considered good as the animal is a symbol of hard work.
