People Who Approach You

1. Pamphlet Distributors

I'm not a big fan of pamphlet distributors and don't usually take the pamphlets from them. In fact, I don't like to be approached on the street for any reason.
But something I saw yesterday disgusted me.

An elderly lady was distributing pamphlets. A middle aged man walked past her, snatched a couple of pamphlets from her and immediately threw them on the ground, as he continued walking. Granted that he may have been mentally unstable or just had a really bad day. But was that any reason to do that? He could have just walked by without taking the pamphlet right?

Nobody was forcing him to take it. At least the elderly lady was not as irritatingly persistent as those people wanting to do "surveys".
Or he could have taken the pamphlet and read it. Or he could have taken the pamphlet and thrown it in the litter bin later.
Why did he have to exhibit that type of aggression, even if he doesn't like to be approached on the street?

He might be one of those who has been force to the wall or to a situation where the govt has "progressed" Sg till the extend that he has problem making ends meet without given any kindness to him by the govt.

Obviously that guy is a loser and can only vent his frustration on an old lady without fear of retaliation.

Just another victim of the PAP system?

I've seen worse, such as people talking to themselves. Usually they are scolding the PAP.

Must be many more Sporeans who've cracked after years of being psychoed by the PAP.

Actually, sometimes I accept the pamphlets from the people just to help them finish distributing the pamphlets, afterall they are doing a shitty job. Naturally, I threw the pamphlets away on the first available garbage bin

2. People asking for donations

For students or kids with a coin box and stickers, I always ask what they are collecting for. If they giggle, refuse to answer, can't answer, or ho-hum-errr for too long, I will just walk away. If they give a proper reply, I will donate.

For people who just ask for money, I will ask them what they want the money for. When they tell me, I will ask them to approach the government.

Btw, I don't donate to beggars sitting down with a hat in front of them. Many of them are foreigners and should go back to their own countries. I once saw a beggar with a white stick on his shoulder. Occasionally, he would look at the messages on his handphone, which is more expensive than mine.

If PAP ask you to donate will you do so? :p

I really, really think its time for Sporean to question these organised begging by the school & other organisations. The NKF fiasco is probably just the tip of the iceberg & since Durai & his gang got away I'm sure there are others out there still taking advantage

Saw a tissue selling old lady yesterday, judging from her many bags, she was homeless.

The economy must be very bad now, very few people bought tissue from her. I just gave her some money and took only one packet from her because she insisted.

Only after that did she sit down at the coffeeshop and rest. I wonder how many packets did she sell that day such that she could only sit down after I gave her the money.

It is not right for an old lady to be homeless and selling tissue here. But this is the state of things now.

You give with your heart, no with your head!. Saw the blind portable organ palyer at the Orchard Rd pedestrian underpass once, many years back, when times were bad using a Nokia handphone, which was out of my reach then!. Never gave that man a cent, from then on...btw, he is not a beggar!, a odd cent or $ goes to his income....again, from the heart!

I usually decline what is given to me, for I feel bad, that, most of the time, I just glanced at what is given to me, & throw it into the dustbins. Rather than throw it in, I just say NO!. But then again, these people are paid by the numbers they are given to distribute!, some really do need the money!, Once again!, I do take some, and decline many, from the heart again!

Flag days...it is definitely no, no, again, depending on the charity...with my heart again!.

I find the flag day sellers a nuisance....you come out of the train station, bus station, shopping mall, etc.., they swarm you, unlike the beggars you see, getting off any seaport, or bus station in the poorer countries!. Batam, you can see many of them. Sometimes you wonder, this is STINKERPORE!?

It's not right but that's the way things are.
Should we try to change it?
I think so. Start with a wise choice of our elected representatives.
Remind them that they work for the country and the citizens, not for the individual top officials.

Absolutely not.
We must always ask questions and think logically, otherwise we are just sheep being led by the nose.

The lady is just doing her job. Dun think its fair to take out one's fustration on someone who is trying hard to mak aliving.

go and focus on those who are damn irresponsible, i think that is better.

3. People wanting to do "surveys"
If I'm not mistaken, these are usually financial "advisors" or "consultants" who want your contact numbers to sell you financial products, on the pretext of doing "surveys".
If they approach me, I will tell them very politely that I'm not interested.
If they ask "why"?, I will reply that I don't need to explain my reasons.
If they persist, I will ask them to move on or ask them for their name, company name and the name and contact number of their boss.
If they ask rude, intrusive or inappropriate questions, I will either say that it's none of their damn business or ask them a similarly inappropriate question.
Most of the time, they will back off.
Anyone in this forum who does such "surveys" are most welcome to comment.
