GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA - A homeless man died about a week after he was beaten up for peeping at a woman in a toilet at Komtar here.
Wong Yin Yow, 59, died at about 10pm on Saturday at the Penang Hospital, where he had been admitted since the Sept 29 incident.
It is believed that he was beaten up by about four men after the 44-year-old woman screamed for help at about 8pm. Wong tried to flee but was caught by several people.
Several passers-by called the police after finding him unconscious near the Komtar bus interchange about an hour later. Wong was then rushed to the hospital where he died without regaining consciousness, according to the police.
George Town deputy OCPD Supt Ismail Toh Paduka Idris said Wong was treated for bleeding of the brain.
He said the woman had lodged a police report that a man had peeped from under the toilet door.
“The case was initially investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for outraging the modesty of a person, but it has now been reclassified to Section 302 for murder following Wong's death.
“The public should not take matters into their own hands. Anyone caught for wrongdoing should be handed to the police,” he added, calling for witnesses to come forward.
