SINGAPORE - Her ordeal began about a week ago when newspapers were announcing the Government's tougher measures on loan sharks - black paint had been splashed on the gate of her flat.
Yesterday, she woke up to find that the gate had been torn off its hinges. Fed-up with this brazen harassment, a feisty blogger has taken her fight to the loan sharks.
On her personal blog, Ms Janise Tan has written about her experience of the past week, and posted photos of the damage caused.
The 22-year-old's post has captured the attention of netizens, with the news spreading quickly on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
"I have had enough. I cannot believe this is happening in Singapore," Ms Tan told MediaCorp last night at her Woodlands flat.
This is what we voted for!
Black paint could still be seen on the torn-off gate which had already been repaired.
The ordeal began last Wednesday when Ms Tan, an events manager, received a call from her mother about the gate being splashed with paint.
A police report was lodged, but later that night, the mobile phone that had belonged her late father rang - for the first time in three months. The caller claimed that the late Mr Tan - who died from a sudden heart attack last October - had owed $6,000.
"It was so crazy," said Ms Tan. "The loan sharks were so bold as to carry these acts out even on the day the (news) reports came out."
She reported the call to the police.
But the loan sharks were clearly not deterred. On Tuesday, they sent a chilling message to the same mobile phone - "I will ask my runners to go to others' home and throw paint. Then I will put your name and contact number, say you are a loan shark," said the message in Mandarin. "If you don't return me the money, I will let you die in jail."
The loan sharks then followed up with a call but reportedly kept mum when Ms Tan demanded proof that her late father owed them money.
She reportedly told the police of the latest exchange but woke up to "smashing" sounds yesterday morning.
Ms Tan then decided to post her experiences as she is feeling "helpless" by the entire incident.
"I'm very afraid of what would or could happen. My mum is very jumpy now. We're worried sick about my 11-year old sister who travels to school alone. I took half-day leave to wait for the police, report this case, and stay by my mum. In desperation, I called the IO (Investigating Officer) again and the phone rung and rung - Still Nothing," she wrote on her blog.
A police spokesperson confirmed the reports and said investigations were ongoing.
Ms Tan said she would email her Member of Parliament, among others, to resolve the matter.
"I want this solved for my family," said Ms Tan. "How can no one call us for a week? Is anyone bothering about the case?"
