Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been charged with carrying out an attack at a railway station.The 46-year-old ex-England and Tottenham player faces two charges of common assault and he is also charged with being drunk and disorderly. Gascoigne was questioned and held in a police cell for 12 hours following the alleged incident at Stevenage railway station on July 4.The retired footballer was charged when he answered bail today, a spokesman for British Transport Police said.
Baljit Ubhey OBE, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'Following an investigation by the British Transport Police, a file was forwarded to us to consider whether any criminal charges could be brought against the 46-year-old man.'Having carefully reviewed all of the available evidence, Thames and Chiltern CPS authorised officers from the British Transport Police to charge the man with common assault, and being drunk and disorderly.'The charges are in relation to an incident, which occurred at Stevenage rail station on the evening of Thursday, 4 July.

'The decision to charge was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors.'Gascoigne, of Gateshead, was released on bail to appear at North East Hertfordshire Magistrates' Court on Monday August 5.The retired midfielder also played for Newcastle, Lazio, Rangers, Newcastle, Middlesborough and Everton. He was capped 57 times by England and scored 10 goals.
