NOBODY helped the motorcyclist as he lay dying on the road.
Instead, passing motorists later helped themselves to parts of his motorcyle.
Mr Mohamad Salam Husin Shafie, 19, was planning to meet his girlfriend after work to break the Ramadan fast on Saturday.
But he never made it to their meeting.
At about 7.40pm, he lost control of his motorcycle and hit the central divider along Jalan Beserah, near a secondary school in Galing, near Kuantan, Pahang, reported Harian Metro.
He fell off the bike and suffered severe head injuries. He died on the spot.
But what was more tragic was the response of passing motorists.
While the young man lay on the ground, no one stopped to help him.
By the time the police arrived, he was dead. All they could do was send his body to the mortuary at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan.
Only when his body was removed did passing motorists stop - to help themselves to his unattended motorcycle.
Slowly and steadily, the 'road samsengs' (bandits in Malay), as Harian Metro called them, made off with various parts of the vehicle.
Deputy police chief Zulkifli Taha said he was shocked and saddened by the heartless thieves.
He said preliminary investigations showed that Mr Mohamad Salam was riding alone from Kemaman to Jalan Gambang to meet his girlfriend. The accident occurred as he was entering a winding side lane.
He said Mr Mohamad Salam's family has already claimed his body.
Superintendent Zulkifli urged witnesses to the accident and the thefts to come forward to help in the investigation.
